Insight Vacations partners with The Conservation Foundation

Rye, NY: Insight Vacations, as part of the Travel Corporation Conservation Foundation, is committed to the active development of sustainable tourism, and in a major new initiative has partnered with The Centre for Battlefield Archaeology (CBA), based at The University of Glasgow. The Centre has earned an international reputation for innovation and excellence in the burgeoning study of battlefield archaeology. Insight's funding is helping the centre reveal a new understanding of major historical events while also providing benefits to local communities. The CBA's most important recent work used forensic archaeology to establish the position of mass graves at Fromelles in France and locate many Commonwealth troops buried there. During 2011, numerous Insight tours will feature a visit to the poignant Fromelles memorial recently inaugurated cemetery.

2011 marks the 70th Anniversary of the Battle of Crete. In 1941, thousands of Australian, British, New Zealand and Greek troops fought a desperate battle against the German airborne invaders. The impact of the fierce fighting and eventual German victory can still be found in the landscape of Crete today. Support from Insight Vacations has helped The Centre initiate the first formal project to focus on the archaeological remains of the battle. Insight looks forward to the increased understanding about key stages of the invasion, occupation and resistance that their funding will help promote.
