HISTORY

Greece has a history dating back millennia and there are plenty of antiquities to prove it. The Palace of Knossos on Crete is said to have held the Minotaur monster and relics from Homeric times can be found at Mycenae. Moving forward to the age of Classical Greece, witness the beautiful setting of Apollo’s shrine at Delphi or Poseidon’s dramatic temple at Sounion. If you love sports, you’ll be fascinated by Olympia, where the first Olympic Games were held in 776 BC. In the Middle Ages, hermits founded monasteries atop narrow outcrops of rock, which you can still visit today. Amid the caffeine-fuelled streets of Athens you’ll find a modern city full of ancient treasures, the crowning Parthenon, standing as an ever-present reminder. If all that overloads the senses, you can always stretch out at the beach, where your biggest dilemma is whether to go for a cool drink or a refreshing dip in the cobalt waters.

THE EVZONE GUARD

The changing of the Evzone Guard in Syntagma Square is the best free show in Athens. A Mecca for fans of colourful costumes, pom-poms and unusual marching. If you’re hungry, the volcanic island of Santorini is spectacular. Dine in the cliff-top capital, facing west, while the sun sets behind the submerged caldera - magic!
