The origins of April Fool\u2019s Day aren\u2019t clear. It seems to date back to the 16<\/span><\/span>th<\/span><\/span>\u00a0century, according to different accounts. In 1508, French poet Eloy\u00a0<\/span><\/span>D\u2019Amerval<\/span><\/span>\u00a0referred to \u201c<\/span><\/span>poisson<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>d\u2019avril<\/span><\/span>\u201d, which is what the French call April Fools\u2019 and may be an account of the celebrations in France. Some scholars have suggested that the vernal equinox was celebrated on April 1, which would mean that some friendly tricks on this day may have originated in some ancient festival.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Others say that it was a joke around the switch to the Gregorian calendar in the 16<\/span><\/span>th<\/span><\/span>\u00a0century when the traditions once surrounding April 1 had moved to January 1, and anyone still observing the old calendar was made a fool of.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Now, many countries have their own traditions around the\u00a0<\/span><\/span>holiday<\/span><\/span>. It is widely celebrated across the world and even big brands and media usually get in on the pranking for one day only. A good prank is always appreciated, especially during these challenging times.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The media have often got in on the act for April Fools\u2019 Day in the U.K. In 1957, the broadcaster BBC reported a record spaghetti crop in Switzerland, even showing Swiss workers pulling noodles from the trees.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Twenty years later, the Guardian newspaper managed to pull the wool over people eyes with an entire\u00a0<\/span>seven-page<\/span>\u00a0supplement covering the fictional San\u00a0<\/span>Seriffe<\/span>\u00a0republic in the Indian Ocean. Hundreds of people called the newspaper wanting to know more about the idyllic island country.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

North of the border, the Scots had two days where they would play jokes on their friends and\u00a0<\/span>neighbors<\/span>. They used to call April 1\u00a0<\/span>Huntigowk<\/span>\u00a0day, where gowk meant foolish person. The gowk would be handed a sealed message to bring to someone, that read \u201cDinna laugh,\u00a0<\/span>dinna<\/span>\u00a0smile, hunt the gowk another mile.\u201d \u00a0This meant the person should tell the gowk to deliver another sealed message to someone else, which read the same. This would continue until the gowk reali<\/span>z<\/span>ed there was no message at\u00a0<\/span>all<\/span>\u00a0and he had been tricked. The following day was called\u00a0<\/span>Tailie<\/span>\u00a0day, where tails would be pinned on people\u2019s backs for a joke. You know when you see \u201ckick me\u201d stuck to someone\u2019s back? That can be traced back to\u00a0<\/span>Tailie<\/span>\u00a0day.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Dutch people like to play jokes on April 1, but they also have a commemoration of seizing the town of Den\u00a0<\/span>Briel<\/span>\u00a0from the Spanish on this day in 1572. Until that time, the Netherlands was under Spanish rule, but this event pushed forward an uprising which drove them to their independence.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The commander in charge of troops at Den\u00a0<\/span>Briel<\/span>\u00a0was the Duke of Alba, so they like to\u00a0<\/span>say<\/span>\u00a0\u201cAlba lost his glasses<\/span>,<\/span>\u201d<\/span>\u00a0as the Dutch word for glasses is \u201c<\/span>Bril<\/span>\u201d. It\u2019s a little in-joke for the Dutch, but n<\/span>ow guests<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>on the Country Roads of Belgium, Luxembourg & the Netherlands<\/span>\u00a0will know why.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In Greece, there\u2019s a superstition around pranking people on April 1. They believe that if you successfully play a trick on someone, that it will bring you good luck for the rest of the year. Those in farming communities believe that a couple of good pranks will bring a bountiful harvest that year, and others even think that the rain has healing properties on the first day of April.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

So, dancing in the rain on April 1 in Greece will be completely normal to onlookers.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

As mentioned earlier, French traditions for April Fools\u2019 Day date back over 500 years. It is said that the phrase \u201c<\/span>poisson<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>d\u2019avril<\/span>\u201d may originate with the Celts, who were great fishermen. The fishing season began on April 1, but if they hadn\u2019t caught a great\u00a0<\/span>haul<\/span>\u00a0on their first day back in the water, some of the fishermen were prone to lie. Now, children stick paper fish to the backs of people \u2013 even strangers<\/span>\u00a0\u2013\u00a0<\/span>so if you\u2019re\u00a0<\/span>travel<\/span>ing in France on April 1 and you hear \u201c<\/span>poisson<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>d\u2019avril<\/span>!\u201d shouted out, check your back!<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Shops and bakeries have fish-shaped treats on offer around the occasion, and children draw fishes and make fish-shaped decorations at nursery and school.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

French companies have also played some spectacular jokes on the public through the years. In 2009, the SNCF railway company hired Philippe\u00a0<\/span>Peythieu<\/span>\u00a0(the French voice of Homer Simpson) to provide some replacement announcements, completely bewildering\u00a0<\/span>travelers<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>On<\/span>\u00a0April\u00a0<\/span>1,<\/span>\u00a02020, with everyone in lockdown, French media began reporting that the Tour de France cycling race would be held in South Korea!<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Although it\u2019s not common for the Italians to share traditions with their French cousins over the border, the name for April Fools\u2019 Day is very similar \u2013\u00a0<\/span>Pesce<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>d\u2019Aprile<\/span>. The most common prank is taping a paper fish to someone\u2019s back, just like in France. In Italy, it becomes a game, where everyone in a room asks who has seen the\u00a0<\/span>Pesce<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>d\u2019Aprile<\/span>, and of course the only person who hasn\u2019t is the unsuspecting victim.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The media like to prank the public on April 1 too, with silly stories such as aliens\u00a0<\/span>attacking,<\/span>\u00a0or money being dished out at a particular location. However sometimes they are the ones being pranked, and they have to discern the real press releases from the fake ones.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In 2001, Italian newspaper La\u00a0<\/span>Republicca<\/span>\u00a0announced that soon telepathy would become a normal human mental faculty, as a scientist had discovered how it was possible. Unfortunately, the scientist didn\u2019t exist!<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Much like Ireland and England, jokes are played on people in the morning, presumably because people still haven\u2019t realized it\u2019s April 1. If they get away with the trick, they sing a line that translates as \u201cIt\u2019s April, eat herring and drink dirt water on top.\u201d People from Finland have said the phrase doesn\u2019t make sense and it\u2019s not really supposed to.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In recent years, the police force in Finland decided to prank their Facebook followers by announcing that they were getting new uniforms that changed\u00a0<\/span>color<\/span>\u00a0in the sun, to make them more visible in traffic. People actually believed the police were going to don pink uniforms and patrol traffic.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In Sweden, they like to play tricks on each other too, but they have a special saying after doing so. It is \u201cApril,\u00a0<\/span>april<\/span>\u00a0dun\u00a0<\/span>dumma<\/span>\u00a0sill, jag\u00a0<\/span>kan<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>lura<\/span>\u00a0dig\u00a0<\/span>vart<\/span>\u00a0jag\u00a0<\/span>vill<\/span>,\u201d, which seems like a mouthful, but it means \u201cApril, April, you silly herring, I can fool you anywhere I want to.\u201d If you don’t say this, then apparently the April Fool is incomplete.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Swedish newspapers and television companies have also thought up elaborate pranks to play on the public, from telling people that they could get instant\u00a0<\/span>color<\/span>\u00a0TV on their black and white sets back in 1967 to being able to access 3G by shaking your mobile phone in 2004. They even convinced the whole country that the clocks were wrong in 1980, six days before Daylight Savings Time was introduced!<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

April 1 is called \u201co\u00a0<\/span>dia<\/span>\u00a0das\u00a0<\/span>mentires<\/span>\u201d, meaning \u201cday of lies\u201d and celebrating it has been popular since 1828, when a satirical paper called A\u00a0<\/span>Mentira<\/span>\u00a0announced that the emperor and founder of Brazil, Don Pedro, had died.
