To mark International Language Day<\/a>, we asked our expert Travel Directors Philip, Meagan and Lola some phrases you should learn before your travel. Masters of language and experts at traveling regularly with guests across borders, they know how to help you get the most out of your trip.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

HELLO, GOODBYE, PLEASE AND THANK YOU<\/h3>\n

\"post<\/p>\n

\n

Simple and basic, learning these words goes a long way. \u201cTo be able to go into a shop and say hello and good morning makes a real impact,\u201d says Philip. Fluent in English, Italian and French he enjoys helping guests out with basic phrases to learn and important words.<\/p>\n

\u201cEven if you can\u2019t manage much, a \u2018bonjour\u2019 in France or an \u2018ahoj\u2019 in Czech will go a long way. Guests feel a sense of achievement and locals feel respected.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn some languages there are formal and informal versions of greetings. For example, in Italy you would say \u2018buongiorno\u2019 for good morning or good afternoon, and \u2018arrivederci\u2019 for goodbye in the more formal sense, but you would use \u2018ciao\u2019 for both with family and friends. I find the Italians and Spanish very forgiving with language, the fact that you tried is very much appreciated.\u201d<\/p>\n

I WOULD LIKE<\/h3>\n
\n

A useful building block for language, the phrase \u2018I would like\u2019 can get you a myriad of thing.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is one of the most useful phrases you should learn. I teach guests how to order a cup of coffee or bottle of wine for example,\u201d says Philip. \u201cI find it very useful in Spain when we are in the more remote areas. Here many people don\u2019t speak any English and the guests are delighted when they can order a \u2018boccadillo de queso\u2019 (cheese sandwich) or a \u2018caf\u00e9 con leche\u2019 (white coffee).<\/p>\n

“Being able to communicate is a great achievement. It also makes a big impact on the places we visit. Just making the effort with these phrases to learn for travel really makes the locals happy.\u201d<\/p>\n

FILLING WORDS<\/h3>\n

As well as directly translatable phrases, many languages use filling words, the equivalents of \u2018well’, ‘so’ and ‘then\u2019, which you will hear extensively.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy travels in Italy particularly stand out for me with regards to \u2018filling words\u2019 as guests are curious about them,\u201d says Meagan. \u201cThe local experts are excellent here and tend to have quite strong accents and very Italian idiosyncrasies. So even when speaking English, they would be using these Italian words.<\/p>\n

“For example, in Italian they use \u2018allora\u2019, and in French \u2018alors\u2019 to mean \u2018well, so, then\u2019. Regularly dropped into sentences, guests are often curious as to what they mean. So, I talk about these words and their usage as we enter different countries to get them prepared.\u201d<\/p>\n

LET\u2019S GO!<\/h3>\n
\n

Something a Travel Director is often saying, and a tour group is often hearing is the local phrase for \u2018let\u2019s go\u2019.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is definitely one of the phrases you should learn,\u201d Meagan says. \u201cIn Spain guests will often be hearing \u2018vamos\u2019. Or \u2018On y va\u2019 in French and \u2018andiamo\u2019 in Italian. This is something else that I teach my guests as we cross over borders so they can listen out for it and understand from the get-go.\u201d<\/p>\n

HAPPY BIRTHDAY<\/h3>\n
\n

\u201cWhen it is someone\u2019s birthday on tour, I always get our guests to sing Happy Birthday in the language of the country we are in,\u201d says Philip. \u201cWhen you sing happy birthday in French, Spanish or Italian it is fairly straight forward, it is the same tune with the words changed a bit. \u2018Joyeux Anniversaire\u2019 in French, \u2018Tanti Auguri\u2019 in Italian \u2018Compleanos Feliz\u2019 in Spanish and \u2018Zum Geburtstag viel Gl\u00fcck\u2019 in German. I find that guests generally enjoy the challenge.<\/p>\n

\u201cOne that is more complicated is the Netherlands. They don\u2019t actually sing happy birthday, they don\u2019t use the same words, not even the same tune. Their song in called \u2018Lang zal ze leven\u2019 which means \u2018long shall she\/he live\u2019. I was very lucky to have a Dutch driver when I needed to sing this, so we sang it together!\u201d<\/p>\n

CHEERS<\/h3>\n

\n

\u201cI always insist that we toast in the language of the country we are in,\u201d says Philip. “It\u2019s one of the most inclusive phrases you should learn.<\/p>\n

“There is something quite special and bonding to be able to all toast together in the local language. So, it is \u2018sant\u00e9!\u2019 in French, \u2018salud!\u2019 in Spanish, \u2018prost!\u2019 in German. When traveling in Switzerland we toast in four languages, French, German, Italian and we say \u2018eviva\u2019 in Romanche.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

FINDING THE RESTROOM\/TOILETS<\/h3>\n
\n

\u201cThis is incredibly useful when traveling\u201d says Spanish native Lola, \u201cand is something we will all need to ask at some point!\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIn Italian you ask \u2018Prego, dove se trova il bagno?\u2019 and in Portuguese \u201cOnde est\u00e1 o banheiro, por favor? When in Spain there four distinct regions, each with a different way to say \u2018toilet\u2019 but the phrase “Por favor, donde est\u00e1 el aseo?\u2019 will work every time.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

WHERE IS….?<\/h3>\n
\n

\u201cSimple, yet highly effective when communicating in a different language, asking \u2018where is?\u2019 is an important phrase to learn,\u201d Lola says. \u201cThe person you are talking to can then gesticulate the answer, through pointing or maybe drawing a small picture. It is amazing how far just a few common words can get you in a conversation.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you were looking for a Cathedral or a Museum for example, in Spanish you would ask \u2018Por favor, donde est\u00e1 la catedral, el museo?\u2019 In French \u2018S’ il vous pla\u00eet, o\u00f9 se trouve la cath\u00e9drale, le mus\u00e9e?\u2019 and in Portuguese \u2018Disculpe, onde se encontra a catedral, o museo?\u2019<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
