A nostalgic tribute to Ford\u2019s Irish ancestry, the 1952 film is a beautifully shot Technicolor presentation deserving of its Academy Award for Best Cinematography, and which also did much to promote tourism to the Emerald Isle that continues to this day.<\/p>\n<p>Based on a short story by Maurice Walsh, an Irish novelist,\u00a0<em>The Quiet Man<\/em>, one of Ford\u2019s best-known works and the one that garnered him his fourth Best Director Oscar, is an epic romantic comedy set in the 1920s that tells the story of Sean \u201cTrooper\u201d Thornton (John Wayne), a retired, Irish-born, American prizefighter from Pittsburgh, PA who travels back to Ireland to reclaim his family\u2019s farm in fictional Innisfree and quickly falls in love and marries the fiery Mary Kate Danaher (Maureen O\u2019Hara).<\/p>\n<p>Cue the music (<em>The Rakes of Mallow<\/em>): Dum-ta. Dum-ta. Dum-ta. So, here I am in the middle of Cong \u2013 aka, The Quiet Man Village \u2013 in Co. Mayo, one of the stops on Insight Vacation\u2019s Treasures of Ireland journey, where the lion\u2019s share of the 42 exterior locations shown in the movie are located.<\/p>\n<p>Armed with a detailed map from The Quiet Man Museum &amp; Gift Shop and several camera\u2019s draped around my neck, I transform myself into one of what the locals call The Quiet Man \u201ccrazies,\u201d the thousands of tourists who invade their fair village every year, and follow in the footsteps of the movie\u2019s stars, extras and film crew, reliving the scenes around Cong as I frame a few shots of my own.<\/p>\n<p>Cong, like all the other stops on the Treasures of Ireland journey, is not short on beautiful scenery and landscapes, which, if you screen the iconic movie, appear to take on a character all their own within the film. From Cong Abbey, to Pat Cohan\u2019s pub (A glass of Guinness and a toastie, please!), to the Dying Man\u2019s cottage, to the River Cong and its picturesque bridge; they all played their parts equally well in the great romance.<\/p>\n<p>Why, I even have an up close-and-personal encounter with Mr. and Mrs. Quiet Man themselves.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.insightvacations.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/eire4_wm.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2749\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2749\" src=\"https:\/\/www.insightvacations.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/eire4_wm.jpg\" alt=\"Treasures of Ireland\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.insightvacations.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/tomweber_quietman_02.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2749\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-2749\" src=\"https:\/\/www.insightvacations.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/tomweber_quietman_02.jpg\" alt=\"Treasures of Ireland\" width=\"923\" height=\"519\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.insightvacations.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/tomweber_quietman_03.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2749\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-2749\" src=\"https:\/\/www.insightvacations.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/tomweber_quietman_03.jpg\" alt=\"Treasures of Ireland\" width=\"923\" height=\"519\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Photos by Tom Weber<\/p>\n<p>The village of Cong, the real-life Innisfree, has built and painstakingly furnished an exact replica of the White O\u2019 Mornin\u2019 cottage, just like the one seen through John Ford\u2019s lens. All the furnishings, artifacts and costumes are authentic reproductions.<\/p>\n<p>The best part of my \u201clocation shooting\u201d was taking the footbridge across the river for a leisurely stroll through the woods leading to the grounds of Ashford Castle, Insight\u2019s five-star accommodations while in Cong, and where John Ford and company stayed and used the sprawling estate as the backdrop for many of the feature\u2019s pastoral and lakeside scenes.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.insightvacations.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/ashford4_c2a9tpt.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2749\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2749\" src=\"https:\/\/www.insightvacations.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/ashford4_c2a9tpt.jpg\" alt=\"Ashford Castle\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.insightvacations.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/ashford2_c2a9tpt.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2749\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-2749\" src=\"https:\/\/www.insightvacations.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/ashford2_c2a9tpt.jpg\" alt=\"Ashford Castle\" width=\"923\" height=\"519\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.insightvacations.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/tomweber_quietman_04.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2749\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-2749\" src=\"https:\/\/www.insightvacations.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/tomweber_quietman_04.jpg\" alt=\"Treasure of Ireland\" width=\"923\" height=\"519\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Photos by Tom Weber<\/p>\n<p>Up a flight of stairs, flanked by a pair of Irish Wolfhound statues \u2014 four-legged guests are always welcome here \u2014 my feet touch the bespoke carpeting as I enter into a magical world of regal elegance sprinkled with Irish charm.<\/p>\n<p>The fully restored and renovated five-star castle-resort, set amid 350 acres of well-manicured greenery, gardens and rustic paths and trails, screens for its guests stellar, full-length classic movies daily in its new theatre furnished with plush velvet armchair-style seating.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019ll grab a box of popcorn, they\u2019re about to lower the lights and start The Quiet Man.<\/p>\n<p>Cue the music: Dum-ta.
