Surprisingly, the vineyards, gabled shop fronts and opulent palaces play second fiddle to the scenery. Experience the magical, unrivalled beauty of the Alpine world, on-board the enthralling Glacier Express.

  1. Day 1

    Welcome to Fun-Loving Munich

Enjoy your complimentary private VIP door-to-door transfer to your UK departure airport. Airport transfers leave Munich Airport for your hotel at 10:00 & 13:00. Later, join your Tour Director for an orientation. See the Feldherrnhalle in the Odeonsplatz, the Palace of the Dukes of Wittelsbach, the English Garden, the Hofbräuhaus, St. Peter's Church and the famous Marienplatz. Afterwards, enjoy a Welcome Reception with the opportunity to mingle over a pleasant evening of dinner and wine.

  2. Day 2

    Jewels of the Bavarian Alps

Embark on an exciting visit to Neuschwanstein Castle, built as a retreat for the wildly eccentric King Ludwig II, bristling with turrets and pinnacles. See the exuberantly-decorated apartments including the Throne Room and Lohengrin Grotto. The rest of the day is free for you to explore Bavaria's capital city. Perhaps visit one of its many art galleries and museums, or relax and enjoy a coffee in the delightful Marienplatz?

  3. Day 3 - Relaxed Start

    Explore quaint Oberammergau

(Relaxed Start) Continue on to Oberammergau, home of the Passion Play since 1634. With your Tour Director, see the immense theatre and colourful chalets before checking into your hotel for the night.

  4. Day 4 - Relaxed Start

    Salzburg, the City of Mozart

(Relaxed Start) A short drive over the Austrian border leads to Salzburg, ‘alive with the sound of music'. Sightseeing with a Local Expert will reveal the formal gardens of Mirabell Palace, the imposing fortress, the cathedral in the Old Town and Mozart's birthplace. In the afternoon, perhaps take an optional experience to Hilter's notorious 'Eagle's Nest'?

  5. Day 5

Into the Wachau Valley to Dürnstein and on to Vienna

First stop will be Mondsee to view the ‘Sound of Music' church, before continuing on through Melk to the beautiful town of Dürnstein, set in the Wachau Valley. 6. Day 6

    Vienna and the Habsburgs

In the morning, a Local Expert will reveal the highlights of Schönbrunn Palace, full of frescoed ceilings, crystal chandeliers, mirrors and gilded ornaments. Spend some time in the formal gardens before going on to view St. Charles' Church, the Hofburg Palace, Parliament and State Opera House. The afternoon is all yours to explore the city at your leisure.

  7. Day 7

Sleepy Austrian Byways to St. Veit an der Glan

Take a delightful drive through undiscovered Austria. Climb the dramatic Semmering Pass and stop in Kindberg with its colourful maypole. Continue to St. Veit an der Glan, former seat of the Dukes of Carinthia and explore the fabulous medieval city walls, the old town square and the ancient Plague column.

  8. Day 8

    The Dolomites to Innsbruck

Head for the distinctive rugged peaks of the Dolomites. Pass through Italy, crossing back into Austria to continue on to Innsbruck, set in a valley of snow-capped mountain peaks. An orientation of Innsbruck shows you the 14th century houses of the old town, the impressive Imperial Palace and the delightful Golden Roof.

Enjoy the marvellous scenery and fresh air or browse in the elegant boutiques. Another option is a ride aboard the Bernina Express - one of Europe's outstanding train journeys.

  10. Day 10

All aboard the Glacier Express and on to Lucerne

An unforgettable journey allows ice-capped mountains, stone-built villages and lush meadows to slip by the windows of your Glacier Express train. Ascend through the spiral tunnels of the Albula Pass and cross the Landwasser Viaduct before heading down through the Oberalp Valley to rejoin the coach at Andermatt. Continue north to lovely Lucerne, one of Europe's most popular cities. Join your Tour Director to see the sorrowful sculpture of the dying lion, cut out of a limestone cliff to commemorate those Swiss Guards who died at the Battle of the Tuileries.

  11. Day 11 - Relaxed Start

(Relaxed Start) The morning is at leisure in this beautiful city with its 14th century covered wooden bridges, painted gables, old walls and watch towers of the medieval fortifications. Stroll across the Chapel Bridge to the Jesuit Church, or use your free time to shop. Later, head to the town of Stans, to embark on a scenic journey by funicular railway and cable car, to the summit of the stunning Stanserhorn. 1st Bus Trip and Best Time

9/23/2015 Laurel Wimbish, New Port Richey, United States

35 Guests and my husband and I had the best time with each and everyone. We loved the countries Germany, Austria, Switzerland,....with a little Italy and Slovenia thrown in on the way. Saw so much and in such a relaxed manner that we were able to truly enjoy every day. Although we did have some rain two days it was still great. This was a great way to see these countries...could not do on a boat or river cruise....our tour guide Irene was THE many personal stories and history relayed in a great manner to enjoy and learn at same time. What a person touch. And our driver Arpi was exceptional. Got us everywhere we had to be. We got red carpet treatment everywhere and every tour was done top notch. No one pushed excursions but glad we did a lot of them. Hotels were also we have stayed in. Will definitely do another trip with Insight again. Had many on our trip who were on their 2nd trip with Insight because it is so great. There were singles and married couples and friends....ages were 50's thru 70's...just a great experience from beginning to end. Thank you Insight for exceptional service and that special personal touch.....Give Irene a big hug. Laurel and Sam Wimbish, Florida

If you get the chance - JUST DO IT

8/21/2015 Robert Hearn, Kiama Downs, Australia

What a wonderful tour. I felt flat when it finished only because I was a continuous high for 11 days. It was just full of beautiful locations. The places we visited were excellent. Being a country roads tour you got to see some of the major cities, but many more county towns and unknown locations/sites. There was very little motorway travel, which was great. The accommodation was above expectations. The food was great and the optional tours were fantastic. We did almost all of them and we weren't disappointed. On top of all that we had a wonderful tour director (the best ever) - Karin and driver - Krystian. Karin's knowledge of the places we visited, the history and the culture was outstanding. She treated us as family and made sure we were looked after in every way. It was obvious she burnt the candle at both ends as while we were sleeping she was working. Krystian's driver was excellent. On the narrow country roads a few truck took more than their share of raod, but Krystian averted any mishap with ease and when we stopped he was there to help the older folk off the coach. I would highly recommend this tour and if you get Karin or Krystian that's a big bonus. I wrote the following few verses about our wonderful tour; Our Wonderful Tour We’ve really enjoyed our Insight tour Of Bavaria, Austria and Switzerland too We’ve seen great lakes and mountains views And eaten Kreme Schnitta and Strudel too The castles and palaces have been so grand This whole trip’s been perfectly planned The hotels were great, prob’ly the best And the optional tours above all the rest The things we have seen never cease to amaze us And this is all done with the minimum of fuss We’ve met lovely people from east and from west And this has helped make it one of the best. It’s so hard to choose just one best thing This wonderful tour has had so much to bring Karin our leader has been incredibly great Doing much work and staying up so late Her knowledge of history and culture astounds And her passion to serve us truly abounds She cares for us greatly and covers so much She does everything with her personal touch She spoils us with treats and other delights And says Guten Nacht as she bids us good night Krystian our driver has been a real star He drives our coach just like it’s a car He does really well and our safety ensures And is there to assist us when he opens the doors All the things we have done have been a delight They’ve dazzled our taste buds and marvelled our sight So thank you to Karin for such a great tour We’ll never forget it that is for sure. Bruce 10th August 2015 I'd better stop now. It's probably too long. Anyway as the heading says - if you get the chance - Just do it!!

    July Bavarian trip

7/26/2015 Jane Dooley, Overland Park, United States

A wonderful experience in every respect (save the heat, which was a surprise to us all). Every turn produced a postcard view, and the optional excursions really added to the trip. Our director did a great job of explaining everything and offered personal experiences and insights (no pun intended) that made the locations come alive. We couldn't have asked for more and highly recommend this tour to anyone who wants a truly memorable up-close look at the Alps and surrounding countryside.

Country Roads of Bavaria Switzerland and Austria Review

6/25/2015 Kelly Peacock, Swift Current, Canada

The above Insight tour was amazing. It was my first trip with Insight and was worth every penny. Our guide Vincenzo was extremely knowledgeable, very personable and always entertaining making for never a dull moment. His afternoon stories and treats were much appreciated and his organizational skills and daily handouts were top notch. Our driver Mandi was also second to none. Always on time, very careful and polite and the coach was kept immaculate. I am very glad I choice the back roads tour as I really enjoyed the off the beaten trail stops and the country life. I also found it nice when we had a two night stay in places as it gave you some time to get grounded. There were no complaints on my behalf with the exception that maybe the meet and greet could have had a meal rather then finger food, I certainly plan on booking again with Insight. Kelly Peacock

6/12/2015 Daniel Williamson, Sparta, United States

Our trip was fantastic from beginning to end. I chose the tour to see Neuschwanstein Castle and was not disappointed. Our tour time and tickets were pre-arranged. When we left the castle and saw the line waiting to purchase tickets, I quickly realized we never would have been able to get in that day without our tour. Although I was a bit taken back by the number of additional excursions, every one was well worth the added expense! Our local experts were marvelous. We were fortunate to have wonderful weather and the scenery was spectacular from start to finish. Our tour director, Maria, was professional, friendly and super organized. Our driver, Costa, was amazing on those country roads! I would not hesitate to travel with Insight again.

    Absolutely Incredible

10/14/2014 Suzi Riley, Templeton, United States

This tour was great!! The bus was roomy and comfortable with plenty of stops along the way for photos. Our driver Johan and torur guide Vincenzo made to tour a truly unique experience. Vincenzo's knowledge of the local history and customs of each place added so much to our travel experience. There was a nice combination of big cities and more intimate places that we stayed that gave a nice variety and balance to the tour. The restaurants and hotels were all very good and the optional excursions that were offered also provided a nice opportunity to sample the local culture. I had such an enjoyable travel experience, I would most definitely book another Insight tour and recommend this to anyone looking for a group tour .

    Wonderful first tour

    8/19/2014 Annette Kelly, Parkdale, Vic

Hi, as this was my first tour with Insight I had to let you know what a fantastic time I had on my holiday. I think I was very fortunate to be with a wonderful group of fellow travellers and an excellent tour guide in Sue Mason. I had always dreamt about seeing the Alps, and as a child the first movie I saw was Sound Of Music, so to visit the area it was filmed in was amazing. But it wasn't just those two areas, about two thirds of the way through the tour, I heard my bus buddies asking each other what had been their highlight of the tour so far, and many of them said that they couldn't choose as each day just got better and better. Even with the unusual weather for summer, Lucerne had the highest amount of rain in July in history, couldn't dampen our spirits. The amount of time we spent in each place was enough to see the area with the group, or to explore by yourself and the hotels we stayed in were comfortable, especially the Renaissance in Lucerne. The only negative critic would be the room I had in St Moritz, it was so small I had trouble finding space to open my suitcase. I had to move furniture in the room to make room to do this. Apart from that I was very happy with the hotels we stayed in. I would just like to mention how professional Sue Mason was when one of our group members had an unfortunate accident. Sue managed the situation to cause the least amount of impact on the rest of the group, but at the same time helping the family to the best of her ability. Thank you once again for a wonderful tour and I will definitely be booking another tour in the future. Annette Kelly.

Great Insight Tour On Country Roads of Bavaria Switzerland and Austria

7/15/2014 Carolyn Jones, Linville, United States

My two daughters and I had a wonderful trip (our first but not last)with Insight. Our tour director, Carl Eggeling and driver Kristian were fantastic. Carl was so knowledgeable and one could tell he loved his job and sharing all he knew about the places we visited. Kristian (actually is spelled with a "K") was a wonderful driver and so pleasant. They made the trip so special. I would love to go on another Insight trip, especially if Carl and Kristian were part of it.

    Fantastic Tour!

6/19/2014 William Peters, Fort Worth, United States

My husband and I just returned from the May 31 Country Roads of Bavaria, Austria, and Switzerland Tour with "Carl with a C" as our tour guide and Udo as our bus driver. We are already looking for another Insight tour! Having taken a tour last fall with a different company, we can definitely see the difference. Here is what we liked: *Carl was a knowledgeable, funny, kind, organized tour guide and a gentleman, too *Udo was a great driver, really appreciated in the mountains *The tour started quickly with a tour of Munich as soon as we met (no wasted time) *We really liked the people on our tour and enjoyed the fact that they were from English speaking countries all over the world. Many had taken Insight Tours before, which is always a good sign. *The places we visited were outstanding and getting off the major highways into the small villages was a real plus! Even our restroom stops and breaks were in small towns! *We did some of the optional tours and balanced it with time on our own. We particularly liked the optional trips to Hitler's Eagle's Nest and the funicular up the mountain from Innsbruck. *We arrived early and went to Hoffbrau House in Munich and did a day tour of Dachau Concentration Camp with a local tour company the morning we started our tour. Glad we saw the concentration camp before we saw Eagle's Nest. *We stayed an additional five days and took the train to Lauterbrunnen and Murren. The trains are great and run on time! *The only thing I would change is that I'd have done more souvenir shopping in Germany and Austria. Switzerland didn't have the same souvenirs and everything was expensive. *Final words: Beautiful countries, terrific weather, fantastic tour!!

    My Best Europe Trip

5/28/2014 Wei Ping Wang, Palo Alto, United States

This trip is really beyond my expectation. The program is well planned with all sorts of different activities. I also like that we stayed in the major cities two nights and had a lot of free time to explore the city ourselves. For instance, in Vienna, I went to the Fine Arts Museum myself. If not because I have the whole afternoon and evening free, I couldn't do it. The farewell dinner is probably one of the best experiences I ever had for my life. Taking two train rides to the top of the mountains with the views of Alps as far as France and Italy side and eating at the revolving restaurant. It is really the wonderful way to finish the trip. I also like some of the optional tours and I do think you shouldn't miss. 1) Eagle's Nest: A great view from the top. 2) Nordkette Alps & Heritage: You have to visit the Maximilian tomb if you are in the Innsbruck. The gondola ride seeing the scenery and plants from different altitudes is super cool too. 3) Slovenia Excursion: One of the best scenery in the trip. The trip won't be this good without our tour guide Vincenzo. I like the paper itineraries he put together every day. I also love the treats he gave us. Only hope that if I could know where to buy those sweets earlier. I would like to bring them home. This trip is Grade AAA. I recommend everyone to take it.

    Magic Country Roads

5/28/2014 Rhonda Cassidy, West Pennant Hills, Australia

Having carefully selected one of Insight's Country Roads tours, we couldn't have been more satisfied with our choice. The tour delivered on every aspect, from the first email from our tour guide introducing himself and explaining exactly where to meet on arriving at Munich airport to the very last moments of our 12 days. As stated in the travel brochure, all accommodation was of a high standard, extremely well located, lovely spacious rooms and offering a great variety at breakfast. The entire tour was beautifully organised with a perfect mix of breath-taking scenic country roads and beautiful towns, along with fabulous features, one of which was the Glacier Express experience. Our tour guide, Vincenzo, was clearly well experienced, extremely organised and incredibly generous in sharing his wealth of historical knowledge and stories relating to everywhere we visited. Add to that our wonderfully obliging driver, Mandy, who was so skilled at managing all the twists and turns of the alpine roads, and always with good humour. They were a great team and a huge part of this trip proving to be beyond our expectations. All around, a fabulous 12 days.

Bavaria, Switzerland and Austria tour with Wolfgang Fineder

10/8/2013 Linda Moore, Deep River, Canada

This is the 4th Insight Tour I have been on and each tour just keeps getting better than the one before. Our tour director was Wolfgang whose incredible knowledge and passion for this area really made our trip. He is a walking history book and has a great sense of humour. He was always right there to help with any problems that arose while on the trip. We did all the optionals but one and enjoyed each one of them. Its hard to say what would be the highlight of the trip but I think I'd have to say the trip to Lake Bled. The scenery was spectacular. Actually the scenery on the whole trip was amazing. Our hotels were all very nice and the buffet breakfasts were outstanding. Truely a 5 star vacation, one that will be hard to beat.

The hills were alive, with Carls busload!

    10/7/2013 Bruce Helman, Eleebana, Australia

What a great bunch of fellow travelers were on our tour Sept14th from Munich. Friendships began and grew, as we added to each others tour experience. All the while with Carls expert arrangements, we followed and enjoyed. After some cloudy, drizzly weather we entered Switzerland in sunshine. Optional tours added more cultural experience and loads of laughs at times. We won't mention the cow. Highlights: Slovenia on the boats, dinner at an Austrian chalet/farm, Lucerne, and dinner up top of Mt. Stassorhorn. Wonderful tour, great people, and yes Carl!

A great tour of Switzerland and Austria

    8/28/2013 Walter Wright, Devonport, Australia

For a tour to be successful four particular criteria need to be met. 1. The tour group needs to meld together and be great company and the group on this tour were fantastic, 2. the itinerary needs to be complete , interesting and meeting the needs of the group - this particular tour was both exciting and covered wonderful scenery and beautiful cities/towns, 3. The tour needs a coach driver who can be relied upon and demonstrates great skills as a driver - we certainly had one of the best on this tour in Mandi 4 . A tour director who has great management skills , a friendly personality and a superb knowledge of the countries history and with Karin we certainly had that. A wonderful tour through Bavaria, Switzerland and Austria - thank you Insight.

    First Tour Trip

    6/26/2013 Sheila Twellman, Appleton, Outagamie

This was our first tour and we feel it could not have gone better. We were privileged to have Wolfgang as our Insight Tour guide and he is "outstanding". Such a wealth of knowledge and a nice person too. Wolfy made us all feel that we were each important and went out of his way to make sure we were comfortable, questions were answered timely and he made sure we were all with him before he moved on. As I told him and sincerely mean, in the future we will judge any tours we go on with the standards he set!

We enjoyed this tour, but there were some aspects that detracted from the enjoyment. The hotels varied in quality too much and we thought the age bracket of our fellow travellers demanded normal showers; not the shower above the bath. We had some issues getting out of the slippery baths at several of the hotels. We would have rather seen less free time and a more leisurely start to the days. An early start for Schronbrunn Palace was a good idea; the others not so much, again given the age of the participants.

    Wolfgang experience!!!!

6/25/2013 Curtis Grunske, Waukesha, United States

Especially because of Wolfgang, our guide the trip could not have been any better. He is like a human history textbook regarding the countries that we visited along with a very nice sense of humor. His organization during the whole trip was commendable which aided everyone on the tour. He was always one step ahead of anything that happened. Thanks again Wolfie, Curt and Mary Grunske
