From the great capital of Edinburgh to the Orkney Islands and Skye, you'll travel through 8,000 years of history and become immersed in Scotland's rich cultural heritage.

  1. Day 1

    Welcome to Edinburgh

Enjoy your complimentary private VIP door-to-door transfer to your UK departure airport. Welcome to Scotland - land of legends and romance, from the great cultural cities in the south, to the dramatic mountains and misty lochs of the Highlands. On arrival at Edinburgh Airport, transfers depart for your hotel at 09:00, 11:00 & 13:00. Then the rest of the day is yours to relax before joining your Tour Director for a Welcome Reception - a pleasant evening of dinner and wine. On selected departures, you will also attend the spectacular Military Tattoo - a colourful mix of pipes and drums, dance and display, set against the floodlit backdrop of Edinburgh Castle.

  2. Day 2

    Edinburgh, The Capital of Culture

Join a Local Expert to see the highlights of the city. Drive along Princes Street to the ornate Scott Memorial, then tour the 18th century New Town with its classical Adam façades. Over in the Old Town, visit the castle, home of Mons Meg, the Stone of Destiny and Scotland's crown jewels. At the bottom of the Royal Mile, stands the Palace of Holyroodhouse, the official Scottish residence of the Queen. The rest of the day is at leisure,  why not visit the art treasures in the National Gallery?

  3. Day 3

To St. Andrews and the Highland Capital of Inverness

Cross the Firth of Forth into Fife and make your way to St. Andrews, where golf was born on the Old Course in the 15th century. After some time to explore, cross the Tay and drive to the charming Victorian resort town of Pitlochry, famous for its salmon leap. Continue via Blair Atholl and over the Grampian Mountains to the sparkling Spey Valley. The Scottish Border Collie is world-renowned for its herding abilities. Visit a working Highland farm for a personal insight into the daily life of a shepherd and his dogs. Continue to stately Inverness, where your luxury Signature Hotel is set within four acres of manicured grounds, offering the very best in Highland hospitality.

  4. Day 4

Culloden, Loch Ness and onto Thurso

See Culloden Moor in the morning, where Bonnie Prince Charlie's Jacobite army was finally crushed in 1746. Visit the Culloden Visitor Centre before continuing along the shores of Loch Ness. Keep your eyes peeled for the monster! Next, follow the rugged coast north to the fishing port of Wick. Pause at the Old Pulteney Distillery to taste a wee dram of whisky and learn about the production of this national drink. Stay in the town of Thurso, which looks out over the Pentland Firth towards the ‘Old Man of Hoy'.

  5. Day 5

A Day in the Orkney Islands

Start the day by driving to the most northerly town on the British mainland, John O'Groats. Board the ferry to the beautiful Orkney Islands - where the hardy locals live ‘below the wind and above the water'. Sightseeing with a Local Expert includes visits to the 5,000-year-old village of Skara Brae, the mysterious Ring of Brodgar, Kirkwall and the small chapel built by Italian prisoners of war during WWII. Return to your Thurso hotel for dinner.

  6. Day 6

    Over the Sea to Skye

Travel through stunning, pristine landscapes along the northern coast with its white sandy beaches, and further inland to misty valleys and glens, lochs and rushing waters. Then it's ‘Over the Sea to Skye' the largest and most beautiful island of the Inner Hebrides. On the way to Broadford, hear romantic tales of how young Flora MacDonald helped rescue Bonnie Prince Charlie.

  7. Day 7 - Relaxed Start

Through the Scottish Highlands to Glencoe

(Relaxed Start) A chance to explore this wild and beautiful island, before crossing to the Kyle of Lochalsh. Stop for a photo at remote Eilean Donan Castle, which, under a clear sky, offers a perfect reflection in its loch. Move on to the WWII Commando Memorial where there is a fine view of Ben Nevis, Britain's highest mountain. We enjoy more spectacular scenery en route to the Valley of Glencoe, its dramatic peaks still echoing with the ghastly cries of massacred clansmen. At night, get together with your friends at a sumptuous grand-finalé Celebration meal. Don't be surprised if, by the end of the evening, you're 'Toasting to the Lassies'.

  8. Day 8 - Relaxed Start

Along the Bonnie Banks of Loch Lomond to Glasgow

(Relaxed Start) Spend time on peaceful Loch Lomond, ‘Queen of Scottish Lochs' and the largest in Great Britain. Perhaps experience the beauty and tranquillity of the loch with an optional cruise before continuing to Glasgow. An orientation drive shows you the city's grand public buildings, including George Square and St. Mungo's Cathedral. Then the rest of the afternoon is at leisure.

  9. Day 9

    Depart Glasgow

Your tour comes to an end after breakfast. Departure transfers arrive at Glasgow Airport at 07:00 & 09:00. On arrival at your UK airport, your driver will greet and escort you to your waiting car for your return private VIP transfer home.

    Absolutely wonderful tour

5/30/2017 Christy Lee Radishofski, Chalfont, United States

This was my first Insight tour-actually my first tour of any kind. I am very happy with my choice! From the beginning, our tour was outstanding! Our tour guide, Siobhan, took care of us at every step. She went out of her way to make sure that we had what we needed at all times. At one point, she gave me the sandwich and soup off her tray because I mentioned to her that I was getting hungry! As for the tour, we saw so many beautiful places and we had just enough time to see everything that was worth seeing at each stop. Loch Ness was magical - I even dipped my toes in! Culloden was magnificent - that's the only way I can describe it...The Orkney Islands - the ferry was lovely, the scenery was stunning...The Isle of Skye had a wonderful hike that we stumbled upon. I only wish we had spent more time there...Our coach was super comfortable, immaculate, had reliable Wi-Fi, and had a place to charge our phones. The tour was well run and professional. I can't say enough good things about my experience with Siobhan and this tour. My recommendations are: bring a rain coat (!!), pack plug adapters, make reservations in advance for dinner in Edinburgh and Glasgow. There is some fabulous dining to be had in these cities! All in all - a trip of a lifetime!!

    Excellent tour

    5/27/2017 Jill Mcdonagh, Dublin, Ireland

From the tour guide John, who was knowledgeable, friendly and helpful; to the bus driver Syd who did a great job navigating the country roads to the group generally who were friendly and happy to participate and be part of the group; this was an excellent tour. The area covered was large and it was great to go to some out of the way places. Local drivers/guides were also very good and in fact everyone was most impressive with their depth of knowledge and laid back friendly style. Some of the hotels we stayed in were not of a very high standard however in almost every case the hotel management went out of their way to make our stay as easy and enjoyable as possible. Congratulations to John for a great job and for making everything run so smoothly. The tour was probably a little too long for me but that is just a personal choice. Overall a great experience, good value for money and generally a tour I would recommend to everyone who wants to see more of Scotland than just the cities.

    Couldn't have been better

5/15/2017 Patricia Massara, Omaha (NE), United States

My husband Vic and I were on a bus tour called "The Country Roads of Scotland" with Michael Doughty as our director. Michael was fantastic, as well as our driver Sid. Michael is a great story teller and had us laughing and wondering which ditties were true and which were added for the story's sake. Our accommodations were very nice and the staff at all the hotels were very helpful.

    Amazing Scotland

6/13/2015 Diane Klein, Long Beach, United States

This was not only my first vacation with Insight but my first vacation outside the US. Traveling alone, I must have had all the luck in my favor when I chose this specific tour because I got the best of people to have on a vacation, the most amazing tour guide and an incredible driver. I've never had so much fun and there was always plenty to do and see and yet, there was always time to relax, laugh and enjoy this beautiful country of Scotland. The tour took us off the beaten path into the Highlands of Scotland where the people were genuinely friendly and the villages and countryside were breathtakingly beautiful. I'm certainly recommending Insight Vacations to friends and family and I'm already looking forward to another adventure with this company.

    Great Scot

6/6/2015 Mady Kassanoff, Denver, United States

The Country Roads of Scotland tour was a terrific way to see some of the more remote areas of Scotland, including the Orkneys and Isle of Skye. The other destinations were equally enticing. Edinburgh was a most intriguing city to begin the tour, but ending in Glasgow was kind of a disappointment. Some of the highlights, besides the two areas given above, were the sheep rancher and his working border collies, the whisky distillery, the castle in Edinburgh, the ship Britannia, and Blair Castle. The hotels in most cities were quite nice. We understand, however, the difficulty in finding higher rated hotels in such generally remote areas as Thurso and Broadford. The food, however, in those hotels was often better than the more upscale establishments. Getting up sometimes at 6:15am was not the easiest thing for us, but it was worth it in order to get more packed into the day. Our tour leader and bus driver were superb. Very outgoing, extremely well organized, and approachable for any issue along the way. She made a point of going around to talk to each of the 40 individuals on the tour. I would recommend giving serious thought to taking a number of the optional tours offered. Overall, a wonderful way to see the beauty, culture and history of Scotland. I strongly recommend arriving in Edinburgh for several days before the start of the tour itself. I would not offer the same advice for adding days onto Glasgow at the end of the tour.

    Scotland Country Roads

5/16/2015 Jeffrey Coffey, Dayton, United States

The trip was fantastic, we had a great time on the tour with each of the people we met from all over the world. Michael the tour guide along with our driver Alister K. and young Alister made the trip more enjoyable. Michael has a great knowledge of Scotland and each of the towns we stopped along the way. His sense of humor will be long remembered. I am anxious to book another tour for more fun times and memories.

    Country Roads Fun

10/14/2014 Charles Kiker, Valrico, United States

My wife and I recently completed the Country Roads of Scotland Tour, along with my brother-in-law and his wife. This trip is one of the few where it has been so much fun, and so very informative at the same time. The trip was greatly enhanced by the knowledge and expertise of the tour guide, along with his sense of humor and welcoming personality. Mike and Knoxy (our expert driver) were so professional and attentive, leaving us to enjoy the trip absent any worries. Our fellow tour participants were great to travel with. I note that Mike engaged all of us in activities designed to help us to get to know one another, which also added to the trip. The tour itself is a nice blend of vistas and architecture, history and lore, and proved to be a great introduction to Scotland! We would certainly do another trip with Insight, and most certainly if Mike and Knoxy are leading the trip!

    Country Roads in Scotland

10/13/2014 Patricia Riker, Effingham, United States

Michael Doughty and Alistair Knox were the most lovely gentlemen I have met in a long time!! They took such good care of all of us and were so concerned that we were pleased with everything. Michael made sure to have a few of us who had trouble climbing stairs have a room on the first floor when there was no elevator. He was entertaining and humorous every day as we traveled and told us amazing stories, some which were most likely untrue but funny!! The scenery was absolutely gorgeous, the ferry to Orkney was great, the driving on narrow roads was safe and secure by "Knoxie". This is a tour for those who cherish pastures of sheep and cattle, lochs and moors, hills and dales and nature at its very best. Scottish hospitality was lovely and kind and so much history to learn.

    Mother-daughter tour

8/25/2014 Jean Sampson, Mckinney, United States

This was a fantastic tour. The towns and villages of the Country Roads are so fascinating and beautiful. The tour director and bus driver helped make the tour even more enjoyable. I wish we could have spent more time in a couple of the places. As a 75 year old, I was thankful that I was able to keep up with the walking, as the pace set by the tour director was extremely doable. There are so many great stories to be told and heard about this beautiful country.

    Country Roads of Scotland

8/23/2014 John Wieder Iii, Rocky Hill, United States

Overall this was a wonderful experience. I was a bit surprised that at the opening night dinner, the Tour Director did not have us at least stand up and give our names and where we were from - would have facilitated getting to know one another. Hotels were quite good - some exceptional. Food was generally fabulous. Pace was a little hectic at times. Bus driver was exceptionally friendly and knowledgeable as were all of the local tour guides. Certainly could not have covered as much territory in this time frame on our own.

    Our Scotish dream trip

8/22/2014 Cassandra Clouser, Clayton, United States

My heritage is Scotish so this trip meant a lot to me and my brother. Starting in charming Edinburgh and attending the fabulous Military Tatto was an amazing beginning to our adventure. Then off to the Highlands !! Traveling on the country roads in our comfort coach, driven by our trusted driver, was the best way to see the lovely lands of rural Scotland. So many sights we saw and our tour guide so knowledgeable, fun, and took excellent care of us. The group was great and the trip worth every dollar !

Everyone needs to take this tour NOW

    7/12/2014 Natasja Rose, Homebush, Australia

Admittedly, I'm not sure I would want to visit Scotland in winter, but even before we reached Glasgow, I found myself wanting to do this tour over and over and over again. Michael, the Tour Guide, was all kinds of hilarious and had some great fun facts about the areas we were going through. The hotels we stayed at were lovely and the countryside possibly the most beautiful I have ever seen.

    Country Roads Mean Country Roads

6/17/2014 James Fliehler, Peoria, United States

Insights Country Roads tour is a wonderful way of seeing major cities in Scotland and small towns in remote areas. The hotels in the larger cities were very nice but counter balanced with less than average accommodation in more remote areas. Keep in mind this is a country road tour so do not expect 4 to 5 star hotels on country roads. Our tour guide was absolutely fantastic. Insight tours should be commended for contracting with an outstanding and knowledgable tour guide. Mike was very responsible responding to all needs even when some were not being reasonable. When a restaurant messed up and did not serve the champagne that Mike ordered; he surprised us with a special champagne salute on the final day. Travelers will not be disappointed with the scenery in Scotland. We have traveled considerably and would rate the countryside as superb. You just cannot capture all of the goods sights. It was a wonderful experience.

    6/15/2014 Joan Petersen, Newport, Australia

This is a great tour for anyone who likes scenery and going to remote places. Scotland is beautiful, lots of mountains and locks, very rugged. Our Tour Director (Michael) and Bus Driver (Knoxy) were excellent. The Tour Director is very knowledgeable with Scotland's history. Insight's buses have very good leg room, this is why we travel with them. The Hotels were all good.

    Very enjoyable holiday

    6/6/2014 David Wilson, Kanata, Canada

We (my wife and I) really had a great time on this our second Insight vacation. The tour director Michael Doughty and our driver Alister Knox we so very good. They were very professional and yet entertaining. The off the beaten track tour was exactly as advertised. Michael had made special arrangements for us to all enjoy a chocolate treat which was incredible. In the middle of the highlands the scenery is something special. The roads are a little narrow in the upper highlands which made me feel like we really were on country roads. Interesting destinations like Ullapool while only a lunch stop had very interesting shops and cuisine. There were so many other little villages which all seem to have unique qualities that I enjoyed very much. I for one would love to return, for I really felt like was home.

    Most Excellent Adventure

6/2/2014 Virginia Wheeler, Marietta, United States

I recently returned from my visit to Scotland, and it was absolutely wonderful. Although it was my first tour with any company, it was quite obvious that Insight has it down pat. We were treated very well, and we couldn't have asked for better hosts. Tour director Michael Doughty and driver Alister Knox were excellent and kept us informed and in stitches the entire way. I would not hesitate to take another Insight tour. Virginia W. Marietta, GA

    Scotland - the high road

    10/19/2013 Jean Fox, Cobourg, Canada

First time I have done an Insight tour - excellent. Hotels were first class.days well planned but what impressed me most of all was our two leaders. Billy's driving over some horrendous roads was amazing - how he missed those silly 'suicide sheep' I'll never know, and our Gentleman of the Isles, Robbie, was a fount of information including some great local yarns. I have some mobility restrictions and he was most kind making sure I missed nothing and that I had a room close to elevators or with few steps. Let him know I now have 2 Steam Jennie CD's! The gentleman who toured us round Skye was another treasure. With staff like this it was a no-fail holiday. Of course our fellow travellers were great, from all over the world Thank you, shall be back!

Choice of destinations & activities would suit most people & all proved to be excellent. We would recommend this tour to anyone wishing to explore the Highlands. Kathy & Vic, Adelaide SA

One of the Best Vacations we have ever been on.

9/19/2013 Kendall Aldridge, Elizabethtown, United States

The country roads of Scotland tour was truly the country roads!! The most beautiful country we have been to so far. The tour was very long and kind of cumbersome having some time to change hotels every night but, the tour guide Mike and the driver Knox absolutely made the trip. We were so lucky to have these two guys. Mike's knowledge of all of our stops was spot on. His stories and jokes kept everyone laughing when we had a long drive. He and Knox always made several stops to let us stretch our legs and have a bathroom break. All in all it was an awesome trip thanks to Mike, Knox and the amazing views and history of Scotland!!!

I thoroughly enjoyed the experience of travelling with Insight - we were very well looked after, with polite and informative staff as well as good choices of accommodation, meals and sight seeing venues. The range of history, geography, geology, economics, mythology and other information provided by our tour guide, Mike, was astonishing.

8/19/2013 Donna George, Las Vegas, United States

The tour was wonderful. Our Tour Director, Rory, was very knowledgeable and very personable. He made the tour so much more. Our driver, Al, was exceptional in moving that bus around and a true Scotsman. We feel the tour could be longer, as in spending two nights in each town so that we could see more for the towns. This was our first out of the country tour and reccommend Insight without a doubt. Thank you. Donna and F. David George

Scotland the Brave and fine weather

    7/19/2013 Geoffrey Pook, Prospect, Australia

The organisation of the tour was efficient as ever. The Tour guide Nigel was very good and his information was well managed. The accommodation was a very good standard. The one thing you cannot count on is the weather, but in our case the cold weather clothing was wasted! This was a tour which I found to be well managed and thorough in its cover of the scenery, history, and culture of Scotland.

    Wonderful tour of Scotland

6/26/2013 Gordon Archibald, La Lucia, South Africa

Exactly the tour we needed to reclaim our heritage. Well planned and well executed by our informative and entertaining tour manager. Coach comfort was top notch and expertly driven by our experienced driver. Thank you for a good holiday.

I liked the Tour very must. The tour guide (dave) was very knowledgeable and our bus driver (Allis) was very good. I met people from all over the world which made for a most interesting and fun trip. I enjoyed it very much. Nancy Schilling

    Country roads of Scotland

6/19/2013 Kenneth Spence, Manchester, United States

The tour guide and bus driver were great. The people we met and the places we saw were wonderful. The food left us a little disappointed. On a scale of one to 10 I rate the trip 9. Ken Spence
