An emotive and poignant journey through the countryside of Northern France, dotted with war cemeteries and memorials for those who fell in 'the war to end all wars'.

  1. Day 1

From Paris to Ypres Battlefields and Lille.

Depart Le Méridien Etoile, at 09:00 bound for Flanders Fields. Visit the Ypres Salient battlefields, including Hill 60, Polygon Wood, the Passchendaele Memorial and Tyne Cot Cemetery. In the town of Ypres, hear the Last Post sounded at the Menin Gate. Continue to your hotel and join your Travel Director for a Welcome Drink.

  2. Day 2

Time for reflection at Fromelles and Vimy Ridge, then onto Amiens.

See the Australian cemetery of Fromelles, commemorating one of the darkest days in Australian military history. Continue to the Canadian National Memorial at Vimy Ridge, dedicated to the battle which became a defining moment for Canada as a nation. Take in a visit to the trenches preserved just as they were during the Great War with a Local Expert, who tells stories of battles that raged the now silent pastures. Continue to Amiens and perhaps visit the impressive cathedral?

  3. Day 3 - Relaxed Start

    The Battlefields of the Somme.

Meet your Local Expert to explore the key battlefields of the Somme. Visit the Lochnagar Crater, the South African and New Zealand Memorials at Longueval, Newfoundland Memorial and Museum and the Franco-British Memorial at Thiepval. Enjoy a stop in Albert to see the church and hear the legends of the Golden Virgin statue atop - once a beacon to many soldiers who passed through the town during the Battle of the Somme. Afterwards, explore Beaumont-Hamel, one of the largest allied offensives of the war, and return to Amiens where you will have the afternoon at leisure. Maybe do a little shopping or spend some time in the historic Saint-Leu district?

  4. Day 4

    Return to Paris.

Visit the Australian National Memorial at Villers-Bretonneux and the Franco-Australian Museum in the local Victoria School. Stop to explore Le Hamel and then continue to Péronne. On return to Paris, a stop is made at Charles De Gaulle Airport. For those departing in the evening, please do not schedule flights before 20:00. Alternatively the coach will drop you at Le Méridien Etoile hotel.

  • Vimy Ridge: Visit the Canadian National Memorial, dedicated to a battle that defined Canada as a nation. Your Local Expert will share stories of the battles that once raged here, as you explore the well-preserved 100-year-old trenches.
  • Somme Battlefields: Venture through the battlefields of the Somme as your Local Expert explains how brave soldiers fought tirelessly for five months.

Trip: Rated previously under the name SW from Cincinnati OH.

Service: The four days were very full. Most fellow travelers were from Commonwealth countries. Some looking for the place were family members fell during WW1. As Americans we were in the wrong part of the Western Front to see sites with which we would most identify. Nevertheless we learned a lot during the tour and have continued to study YouTube.com videos since to 'fill in the blanks.' We were especially touched by the Canadian Memorial manned by Canadian College Students who served as interpreters. We'd highly recommend the tour. The local resource guides were excellent.

Trip: The sites were ones I wanted to learn about, especially Vimy Ridge, and John Pitts added so much background information which put everything in context for us.

Service: Sorry I did not mean to rate our tour that way. My wife and I enjoyed all aspects of the trip including the villages in which we stayed. We were also impressed by the skill of the bus driver and especially our knowledgable guide John Pitts. He did an excellent job of informing of the sites we were visiting and of meeting the interests of all passengers. I would travel with him again.

Trip: Very very informative and an eye opener

Service: Our tour guide Gary Junge was ‘the best ever’ a walking encyclopaedia, would love to do another insight tour as long as he was our guide

Trip: This itinerary did not disappoint. Each site, memorial and cemetary we visited were well worth the time and money spent. It was a very somber and humbling experience. I would highly recommend.

Service: The tour itself to the various memorials and cemetaries was excellent. Our travel director was very personable, knowledgeable and informative. Our bus driver was amazing!! All the various guides we had along the tour were excellent! The negative aspects of this tour were that the "welcome drink" was very uneventful and disappointing. We had to line up to get served in plastic cups and it was quite chaotic. It would have been nice to either have a welcome dinner or farewell dinner or something of that nature. Also, the bus we travelled in was not the usual Insight bus, which we expected. The bus we had was more cramped inside with less leg room. That was also disappointing.

Trip: See previous comments as I covered this then

Service: Well planned trip although the timelines jumped around which meant it took me a while to assimilate the bits we saw. All came into perspective on the last day. John was extremely knowledgeable.

Trip: The stops were important and interesting. I would have liked more time at the Monash Center and a stop in Verdun would have saved us an extra tour.

Service: Loved Carly our tour director. She was knowledgeable and so friendly. Our local guides Soren and Michael really brought the history to life.
