October is a truly remarkable month to travel. The Saxons’ word for this time of year was ‘Wintirfyllith’, literally meaning ‘Winter full moon’, as it heralded the first full moon of the winter season. For many of us in the Northern Hemisphere, it’s when the seasons go through their most dramatic change. By now summer has fully faded, giving way to the golden colors of fall. Leaves start falling and crunching underfoot, and temperatures significantly drop. It’s also a time of year when the world transforms into a traveler’s paradise. October is a splendid time to explore, with cooler temperatures, breathtaking foliage, and often far fewer crowds in some of the world’s most interesting destinations. Plus, there are plenty of places to go for sun-seekers looking to extend their summer – if you know where to look. Here are the 20 best places to visit in October, as researched by our travel experts.

1. New England, USA

Trees and fall foliage reflected on a small pond

New England is practically what comes up in all our heads when we try to picture fall foliage. October in New England is classic sweater weather, with daytime highs usually around 10–15°C (50–60°F) and colder nights dropping towards 0–7°C (32–45°F), plus generally dry, crisp air that’s perfect for peak foliage drives. The states of Vermont, New Hampshire, and Massachusetts offer some of the most vibrant displays of autumnal colors in the whole of the northern hemisphere. Take a scenic drive through the countryside, visit Acadia National Park, hike in the White Mountains, and enjoy a cozy stay in a quaint B&B. Don’t miss the chance to pick apples and savor fresh cider – quaint and characteristically autumnal things to do at this time of year. Oh, and if you pass through Vermont, note all the maple trees afire with blazing rouge colors during the fall. They’re really impressive; it’s no wonder that Vermont produces more than half of all the maple syrup made in the United States!

2. Switzerland

Cows in a field in a Swiss village as the sun rises, autumnal backdrop of red and gold coloured trees cover the surrounding mountains

Switzerland in the fall is a sight to behold. In Switzerland, October days in the cities tend to sit around 13–15°C (55–59°F) with nights near 7°C (45°F), while the Alps are noticeably colder with a real chance of early snow dusting the higher peaks. At the base of the mountains, Switzerland’s famous vineyards all turn into incredible colors too, making for an absolute spectacle. Look out for the cows returning from the their high-altitude grazing back down to warmer pastures, which is celebrated by locals with a festival called Désalpe – it normally takes place in the weeks between September and October.

Plus, at this time of year the whole country’s less crowded, the weather is crisp, and the freshly-harvested food is wonderful. Rome is one of the best places to visit in October. In summer, the city is packed full of tourists. 12. Finland

Autumn in Finland, colorful houses sit behind orange-hued plants in the foreground

Finland in the fall is perfect if you want a bit of tranquility and natural beauty. The forests are painted gold, making it a beautiful time for outdoor activities like hiking and fishing. The Finnish love the colors of fall foliage so much they have a nickname for it – ‘Ruska’. The temperatures range from cool to properly cold, with southern areas like Helsinki averaging around 9–14°C (48–57°F) by day and 3–6°C (37–43°F) at night, while central Finland and Lapland are often close to or below 0°C (32°F) with early frosts and the first snow.

Helsinki, with its blend of modern design and historic architecture, is a must-visit. Explore the city’s unique buildings, museums, and vibrant cultural scene. Head to Lapland for its unique landscapes, where you can experience the pristine wilderness and possibly spot reindeer in their natural habitat. The Finnish Archipelago offers serene beauty with its countless islands and quiet coastal charm, ideal for a peaceful retreat.

One of the most magical aspects of October in Finland is that it’s prime time for hunting the northern lights. We think it’s actually a very under-appreciated time to look for the aurora borealis, as many people hunt in winter to see the lights reflect off the snowy landscape. In fact, Dr. David Hathaway, a geophysicist at NASA, used 75 years of historical records to determine that geomagnetic disturbances in the Earth’s atmosphere (which create the Northern Lights) peak during the equinox months – so September, March, April, and October.

13. Kyoto, Japan

Kyoto city alley

Japan is famously beautiful in autumn, and Kyoto is where the season really shows off. October is when the heat and humidity of summer finally ease, walking weather becomes comfortable, and the first hints of kōyō (autumn leaves) start to appear in the city and surrounding hills. Nationwide, Japan’s tourism board calls autumn one of the most scenic times of year, with landscapes turning vivid shades of red, orange and yellow.

Spend your days wandering temple districts like Higashiyama and Arashiyama, where shrines, gardens and wooden machiya townhouses sit against backdrops of changing maple and ginkgo trees. As the month goes on, early color arrives in higher, cooler areas around Kyoto Prefecture, so you can easily time day trips into the hills for a stronger hit of foliage. 14. Petra & Wadi Rum, Jordan

petra at sunset

If you’ve ever dreamed of walking through the Siq to see the Treasury appear in front of you, October is one of the most comfortable months to do it. Travel guides consistently flag spring and autumn as the best times to visit Petra and Wadi Rum, with October and November bringing milder temperatures that are far better suited to exploring on foot.

Start in Petra, the Nabataean city carved straight into rose-red cliffs and now protected as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. To plan your visit, practical information and maps are available from Visit Petra, the site’s official portal. Then head south to Wadi Rum, where you can sleep in a Bedouin-style camp and watch the sky darken to a sheet of stars over sandstone towers and dunes. The national tourism board, Visit Jordan, calls the country a haven for hikers, historians and food-lovers alike – and in October, the combination of clear skies and forgiving temperatures makes it especially rewarding.

15. Andalusia, Spain

Plaza de Espana, Seville, at dusk

If you like the idea of sunshine without searing summer heat, put southern Spain on your October list. In Andalusia, average autumnal temperatures hover roughly between 17–30°C, making September to November one of the most pleasant periods to travel – warm enough for café terraces and evening strolls, cool enough for proper sightseeing.

Base yourself between Seville, Córdoba and Granada to soak up the region’s Moorish and Spanish heritage. In Granada, explore the hilltop palaces and gardens of the Alhambra, while Córdoba’s Great Mosque and Seville’s cathedral and Alcázar form part of a cluster of UNESCO-listed historic centers across the region. Out in the countryside, harvest time fills village markets with new olive oil, jamón and local wine. Thanks to the softer light and thinner crowds, Andalusia’s plazas, alleyways and whitewashed hill towns feel even more atmospheric than they do in high summer.

16. Cape Town & the Winelands, South Africa

In the Southern Hemisphere October is spring, and Cape Town might just be one of the best places to visit in October if you want sunshine with a side of scenery. Days are warming up after winter, flowers are out on the hillsides, and the city is gearing up for the summer season without yet feeling busy. Cape Town highlights include everything from beaches to hiking routes centered on Table Mountain, one of the New 7 Wonders of Nature and the city’s most famous landmark.

It’s also a brilliant time to get out into the Cape Winelands. Towns like Stellenbosch and Franschhoek are wrapped in bright green vineyards and framed by dramatic sandstone mountains, with mild temperatures ideal for long wine tastings and leisurely lunches. South African tourism organizations point to autumn and spring as the moments when landscapes are at their best and wine estates are at their most relaxed – and in October you’re firmly in that sweet spot.

17. The Romantic Road, Germany

Rothenburg ob der Tauber

Germany’s Romantic Road is a classic European road trip at any time of year, but October suits it especially well. This 400-kilometre route runs from Würzburg on the River Main down to Füssen in the Bavarian Alps, passing walled towns, half-timbered villages and fairytale castles along the way.

In autumn, the vineyards around Würzburg glow gold, and the forests and fields surrounding places like Rothenburg ob der Tauber, Dinkelsbühl and Augsburg turn vivid shades of amber and rust. By the time you reach Füssen, the foothills of the Alps are framed by lakes and forests in full fall color – a striking backdrop for nearby Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau castles. Germany’s official tourism site and the Romantic Road organization both describe the route as one of the country’s most popular holiday itineraries, with dedicated buses and well-marked cycling and driving options if you prefer not to self-drive the whole way.

18. Istanbul & Cappadocia, Türkiye

Istanbul Mosque sunset

October is a sweet spot for visiting Türkiye. The high summer heat and peak crowds have eased, but you still get long, bright days. In Istanbul, average temperatures typically sit in the mid-teens to low 20s °C, ideal for walking between neighborhoods, crossing the Bosphorus by ferry and lingering in café terraces.

Start with the great icons of the city: Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque, the Grand Bazaar and the atmospheric lanes of the old peninsula. For up-to-date information on opening times, events and suggested routes, the official sites GoTürkiye and Visit Istanbul are excellent planning resources.

Then fly inland to Cappadocia, where October’s cooler 7–21°C range makes hiking the valleys and rock-cut churches much more comfortable than in midsummer. Watch the sunrise from a hot-air balloon, then spend your days walking through the otherworldly chimneys of Göreme and staying in atmospheric cave hotels carved into the soft tuff cliffs.

19. Greek Islands, Greece

greek island at sunset santorini

Greece is synonymous with summer, but October can be a far more relaxed way to experience its islands. Travel writers and Greece specialists often recommend October as a shoulder-season month when the Aegean is still warm enough for swimming, but the biggest cruise and resort crowds have eased off.

Islands like Santorini and Mykonos stay open later into the season than smaller, more remote spots, so you’ll still find ferries, cafés and hotels operating – just with shorter queues and softer prices. Spend your days wandering whitewashed lanes, visiting archaeological sites or simply lingering over long lunches by the sea.

20. Patagonia, Chile & Argentina

Chilean Patagonia

For something truly dramatic, head south. October marks the start of spring in Patagonia, and several specialist operators highlight the October–November window as a particularly rewarding time to travel. Trails in Chile’s Torres del Paine National Park begin reopening after winter, wildflowers appear on the steppe, and there are still far fewer visitors than you’ll find in high summer.

On the Argentine side, around El Calafate and El Chaltén, this is also when hiking paths towards the Fitz Roy range and surrounding glaciers become more accessible, while still feeling wonderfully remote. The park is open year-round but busiest from December to February – another reason October stands out if you prefer wide open trails and easier availability at lodges and estancias

Visit the Heart of Patagonia with Insight

Whether you’re drawn to the autumnal charm of New England’s foliage, the sunny beaches of Hawaii, or the stunning natural beauty of Finland, October clearly has a lot to offer as a month to travel.
