What is travelling responsibly?

Travelling responsibly means being conscious of your travel choices. This includes choosing providers with sustainability strategies and accreditations and those that are actively striving for more sustainable options. You can also travel responsibly as an individual. Be mindful of your footprint, carry your own drink bottle and shopping bags, eat local and support local economies.

At Insight, our sustainability strategy How We Tread Right is aligned to 11 of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. From MAKE TRAVEL MATTER® Experiences available on most tours, to our commitment to Net Zero by 2050, we put our planet, its people and wildlife first.

To help you out, we’ve put together a handy responsible travel checklist, developed by our TreadRight Foundation.

Why is it important to be a responsible traveller?

By being a responsible traveller you are contributing to local economies, helping preserve local communities and cultures and protecting the environment and wildlife. Responsible travel can also be very rewarding, deepening your connection to a destination and making your vacation even more enjoyable.

Why is sustainable tourism so key?

It allows us to optimally use the resources of a destination, support their communities, promote education through travel and preserve the environment. This ensures we make a positive impact on the places we visit, now and for future generations.

What are the principles of sustainable tourism?

The three key pillars of sustainable tourism are environmental, economic and socio-cultural. Our MAKE TRAVEL MATTER® Experiences address all three and are aligned with 11 of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, to ensure they make a positive impact.

What should be done to achieve sustainable development?

We believe everyone should consider their footprint whilst travelling and, at Insight and through our sister brands at The Travel Corporation, we're doing that through our sustainability strategy, How We Tread Right, and MAKE TRAVEL MATTER® Experiences.
Sustainable development is development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs, and today's leading framework for sustainable development are the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals which we use to underpin our strategy as well as our MAKE TRAVEL MATTER® Experiences.

What is climate action and why is it important?

Climate Action is urgent action needed to address climate change and its impacts. These efforts involve reducing greenhouse gas emissions and taking action to prepare for and adjust to both the current effects of climate change and the predicted future impacts.
It is also one of our focus United Nations Sustainable Development Goals - goal 13. Our Climate Action Plan commits us to reach net zero greenhouse gas emissions across the value chain by 2050, with targets endorsed by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). We’ve also created an internal carbon fund, with revenue from TTC brands, backing big and bold net-zero initiatives.
