February 5, 2016 - Zika Virus Outbreak

According to World Health Organization (WHO), Zika is a disease spread to people primarily through the bite of an infected Aedes species mosquito. An estimated 80 percent of people don’t develop symptoms after being infected with the virus.  For those who do, the symptoms are usually mild — a rash, headaches, pain in the joints and bones, and fever.  These symptoms typically show up between three and 12 days after the initial mosquito bite, and then go away within a week.  Hospitalization is uncommon and death is rare.

However, women who are pregnant or plan to become pregnant should take caution.  There have been reports of a serious birth defect of the brain called microcephaly (a condition in which a baby’s head is smaller than expected when compared to babies of the same sex and age) and other poor pregnancy outcomes in babies of mothers who were infected with Zika virus while pregnant. Knowledge of the link between Zika and these outcomes is evolving, but until more is known, WHO recommends special precautions:

Women who are pregnant (in any trimester) or planning to become pregnant:

• Consider postponing travel to any area where Zika virus transmission is ongoing.

• If you must travel to one of these areas, talk to your doctor first and strictly follow steps to prevent mosquito bites during your trip.

• Half of pregnancies are unintended. If you visit a country where Zika transmission has been reported, strict use of birth control is advised.

With rare exceptions, the virus does not appear to linger in the body, and people who recover from the infection are immune.

• The risk is very low of transmitting the virus to an unborn child conceived after a visit to a destination where there had been reported cases of the Zika virus.

For more information please visit http://www.who.int/features/qa/zika/en/

Prevention: Insight Vacations recommends guests carry insect repellant when travelling to foreign countries. WHO approved repellents containing DEET, picaridin, IR3535, and some oil of lemon eucalyptus and para-menthane-diol products provide long lasting protection. Light color clothing, full sleeves shirts and long pants also protect from mosquitos. More information can be found at http://www.who.int/mediacentre/factsheets/zika/en/

Who is at Risk? About 1 in 5 people infected with Zika virus become ill. Pregnant women or any women who are planning to become pregnant should consult their doctor before travelling to any regions affected by Zika virus. It is also recommended to consult your doctor before you make travel plans if you are susceptible to common infections.

Insight Vacations will offer full refund to any women who are pregnant at the time of travel to affected countries and wish to cancel. Travelers will be required to provide a doctor’s note prior to cancellation. Many air carriers will also provide full refund or free changes to pregnant women travelling to affected areas. We recommend you contact your air carrier for more information.

The health and safety of our travelers and team members is always our top priority. There are currently no changes to any of our itineraries. We will continue to monitor the situation and in all cases will be guided by the WHO. Details about Zika virus can be found at World Health Organizations’ website
